Dental Implant Restoration

Dental implants were a relatively recent development that accompanied dentures as the solution to replacing missing teeth. They are synthetic structures placed in the area of the tooth centered on the root. Dental implants are attached to the jawbone or metal framework on the bone, they eventually create a foundation for the placement of an artificial tooth or permanent bridge.

A dental implant is essentially a titanium post inserted into the jawbone. After a period of healing, it will function in a similar manner to the root of a tooth. A crown will be placed over the tooth to protect from additional damage. They are considered long term restorations and are comfortable, natural looking, and function effectively.

The success of dental implants depends on whether a patient is the right candidate for the treatment. Patients must have the proper bone density and effective immune system to support dental implants.

Dental implants are designed to provide cosmetic benefits as well. They replicate the appearance and feel of natural teeth and are frequently fabricated from titanium material.

A dental implant procedure can require multiple visits. The first visit involves the use of an anchor placed into the jawbone, the site requires several weeks to heal. Tissue will eventually grow around the anchor, a process known as ‘Osseointegration’. For the second visit, an artificial and natural-looking structure is designed and fitted over the anchor. For upper and lower teeth, the dental implants require up to six months of healing. Once they are secured, they are uncovered for the extensions to be attached. The artificial teeth are then placed onto the extensions.
